Tech businesses tend to hog the spotlight in the startup world, with the social media giants’ founding stories becoming the things of myth these days. So the idea of founding the next great app appeals to all of us. But you don’t just go from first-draft code to billion dollar publicly-traded household name overnight, and one of the biggest considerations in building your brand is marketing. So let’s look at our three top tips for marketing your tech startup.

1. Public Relations Campaigns

Plenty of companies use PR as a marketing channel, but tech startups are uniquely positioned to take full advantage of PR due to new technology always being a hot topic that people want to read about. Start by drafting a ~500 word press release about your business, then send it to any publication that covers your industry. Those journalists will become valuable business contacts for you going forward, and eventually may turn to you for your expert opinion on other industry happenings, further boosting your startup’s reputation.

2. Content Marketing

Building your own content is Internet Marketing 101 these days, but it bears repeating. Whether it’s blogs, memes, TikToks, podcasts, or anything you like — all that matters is that you are making content that your audience wants to consume. Start by writing a short blog post on a topic you’re well-informed on, then grow that into a few more posts, maybe a video version, then rinse and repeat.

3. Paid Advertising

I know it’s hard, but sometimes the only way to get what you want is to pay for it. Paying for search and display ads through Google, Meta, and any other platform where you’re operating can be the quickest way to grow your audience in the short term. You’ll first need to check each platform’s specs to make sure your ads follow the correct formatting, then write your copy, design your visuals or pull some from the content you’ve already made, and commit a portion of your marketing budget to each platform.
